ince 1976, the Coal Pit Learning Center’s free preschool program has assisted at-risk children from low-income families by teaching essential social, emotional and academic skills, giving them a positive attitude toward learning, and thus enabling them to excel upon entering school. Ultimately, these students are able to build upon their in-school successes, enter the work force competitively, and escape from the cycle of poverty.

he preschool program, however, has been only part of the Coal Pit story. Recognizing that a positive home environment is also essential for students to succeed, Coal Pit’s staff works with the students’ families by encouraging self-reliance and serving as a resource in locating essential services. Through daily interaction with the parents, Coal Pit’s staff encourages them to enter the work force or to pursue a GED or other educational opportunities.
